After getting there, Sydnee insisted she go to "big church". We knew that would last long, but we said ok. She wasn't thrilled that she couldn't participate in communion. But she didn't understand the concept behind it. Just after we finished the worship portion and getting ready for the sermon, Simon's number came up on the screen. I jumped up and took off. I was scared to see what I was going to walk into. They don't put numbers up there unless it's important. I wasn't sure where they would have him, so I went to the welcome center in the education wing. I could hear his voice and just followed it. I turned the corner near the railroad car and found a man holding onto Simon, 3 police officers and someone from the childrens department. At the time I recognized the one man from the head of security, and a uniformed officer, but the others weren't in uniform. I took Simon by the arm and we went into a room. They left me alone with him to see what I could do. But they did keep checking in to see if we were ok.
I finally got to the bottom of the problem. The kids went to chapel and the music was very loud. He is very noise sensitive, but apparently today more than normal. Well it triggered him into a rage in the end. He started by holding his ears and then walking around, then pushing things, then kicking, and then running away from people while he pushed and kicked. He asked me how the people got to him so quickly. I told him our church has one of the best security procedures around.
After Simon was much calmer, we asked the one officer to come back in. He asked Simon what happened and Simon told him about the music. The officer looked at me and agreed that it was very loud today. I explained to him about the RAD and he just shook his head like he understood. He talked for a while to Simon and told him his name was Rusty and that he was an officer that worked here at church. Simon said he was ready to go back to class and the officer offered to let him finish out the time in his office watching the security monitors. But Simon wasn't interested. But the officer told him he wanted to be friends and that if he ever feels upset or anything to tell them to page Rusty and he would come for him. Wow!
I got back to my seat and the sermon was over. So I completely missed it. We went back to pick Simon up and they told me he was still having problems. They didn't explain, but just wanted me to know. Just as I was leaving the room after getting him, they met me to let me know I could get a chaperone for Simon that would stay with him during the entire time he was at church. All I need to do is call the disabilities ministry and they would set me up. Thank you Jesus! She said she didn't want to label him, but just wanted me to know it was available. I am glad she told me that. I will certainly be calling them on Monday.
Tomorrow the kids and I leave for Cincinnati after school. They both have appointments on Tuesday. I hate them having to miss school, but it is definitely for a good cause. Sydnee has a neurology appt for the instability in her walking and just standing. Simon is a follow up.
